2 Minnesota state lawmakers shot in targeted incidents: Reports

() Two lawmakers in Minnesota were shot in targeted incidents on Saturday, according to reports.

Minnesota state Sen. John Hoffman and Minnesota state Rep. Melissa Hortman were reportedly shot in their homes by a gunman impersonating a police officer. Hoffman’s wife was also shot.

Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz described the shootings as “targeted” in a social media post.

“I’ve been briefed this morning on an ongoing situation involving targeted shootings in Champlin and Brooklyn Park,” Gov. Walz posted on X. The Minnesota Department of Public Safety and local law enforcement are on the scene. We will share more information soon.”

Hoffman, a Democrat, was first elected in 2012. He runs Hoffman Strategic Advisors, a consulting firm. Hortman is the top House Democratic leader in the state Legislature and a former House speaker. She was first elected in 2004.

Lisa Demuth, Minnesota’s Speaker of the House called the incident an “evil attack.”

“I am shocked and horrified by the evil attack that took place overnight,” said Demuth. “Please lift up in prayer the victims, as well as the law enforcement personnel working to apprehend the perpetrator.”

The two shootings took place in Champlin, Minnesota, and Brooklyn Park, Minnesota. Residents of Brooklyn Park have been urged to shelter in place.

Walz said he’s activated the State Emergency Operations Center.
