YouTube plans to introduce its Veo 3 AI video creation tool to YouTube Shorts later this summer, as announced by CEO Neal Mohan during a Cannes Lions keynote speech. This tool was humorously described by my colleague Allison Johnson as “a slop monger’s dream.”

Currently, creators can utilize the older Veo 2 model for adding backgrounds using Dream Screen and for making independent clips. Although Neal Mohan didn’t give specific details on what Veo 3 will bring to Shorts, he hinted at its enhanced video quality and ability to incorporate audio, suggesting these improvements will be part of Shorts as well.

It’s still unknown if there will be a fee for Shorts creators to use Veo 3. As it stands, generating videos with Veo 3 requires a paid subscription to Google’s AI Pro or AI Ultra services. Google has not yet responded to inquiries for further information.

Mohan also announced that Shorts are now averaging more than 200 billion views per day.
