DECATUR, Ill. (WCIA) — A pedestrian encountered an accident in Decatur on Thursday night after being hit by a vehicle while walking on the road under the influence of alcohol, according to police reports.

The Decatur Police Department reported that officers were dispatched to the 3400-3600 block of N. Martin Luther King Drive around 10:20 p.m. due to a personal injury incident.

Initial findings suggest that a 2006 GMC Envoy was heading south in the right lane when it collided with a pedestrian who was also moving south along the same lane on the roadway.

The pedestrian, identified as a 23-year-old Chicago man, was taken to a local hospital with life threatening injuries. The driver, a 69-year-old Decatur man, wasn’t hurt in the accident.

Police said there weren’t any indications that the driver was under the influence, but the pedestrian had a BAC of .167. In addition, the pedestrian wasn’t wearing any reflective clothing and was walking on the roadway instead of the nearby sidewalk when he was struck.

As officials continue to investigate the crash, Decatur Police said no further information will be released at this time.
