Thailand is intensifying restrictions on cannabis use, leading Australian travelers to be aware of new advisories.

This week, Health Minister Somsak Thepsutin issued an order prohibiting stores from selling cannabis to individuals without a medical prescription.

It also seeks to reclassify cannabis buds as a controlled herb.

“The content of Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) must be below 0.2 per cent in weight and you must have a prescription.”

In general, Smartraveller recommends exercising “a high degree of caution” due to potential threats, including terror activities, political instability, and incidents of drink spiking.

Thailand previously became the first Asian country to decriminalise cannabis in 2022.

The current ruling, led by the Pheu Thai Party, initially aimed to make the drug illegal again, yet encountered stiff opposition from their former coalition government partner, the Bhumjaithai Party, which had advocated for decriminalisation.

Bhumjaithai quit the coalition last week over a leaked phone call between Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra and former Cambodian leader Hun Sen.

Somsak told reporters on Tuesday that he would like to relist cannabis as a narcotic in the future.

The move came after officials last month revealed that cannabis smuggling cases involving tourists had soared in recent months.
