John Emerson had a 50-year career as an artist â 45 of those years were with The Walt Disney Company.
His former co-workers describe him as an integral part of the background and special effects departments when he worked as a Disney animator.
David Bossert is a longtime friend and former co-worker.
âHe was an exceptional background artist and a master of the airbrush technique. He contributed to elements like Flitâs wings in âPocahontas,â and created some of the remarkable effects in the firebird sequence in Fantasia 2000,â Bossert remarked. âHe worked in a very unique niche, creating extraordinary work that might not stand out because itâs not character-based, but you can sense its impact through his skill.â
Emerson is now 91 years old. He worked his magic decades before the digital age.
Filmmaker Ted Thomas, son of the esteemed Disney animator Frank Thomas, likened Emerson to a versatile handyman at Disney Animations. Emersonâs key instrument was the airbrush.
âThe airbrush functions as a highly precise tool similar to a miniature spray paint device,â explained Thomas. âInitially, it was utilized to retouch photographs, but in the realm of animation, it was employed for a variety of special effects, and John excelled in its use.â
The reason for this celebration of John Emersonâs work comes on the 30th anniversary of âPocahontas.â His other credits include Disney classics âMary Poppins,â âBedknobs and Broomsticks,â âThe Little Mermaidâ and âBeauty and the Beast.â
Being recognized for his 50 years of animation, as he put it, blows him away.
âI donât think you can imagine the overwhelming honor it feels to have so much love coming my way. It just feels so warm and wonderful,â he aid.
Of all of his memories at The Walt Disney Company, one stands out to him: When Walt Disney himself told him he liked his bright shirts that he wore to work.
âIt was so exciting to stand next to Walt Disney and have him say something to you⊠that was a wonderful memory.â
And his work on some Disney classics have given us some wonderful memories, too.
