The Fourth of July weather in Central Illinois is forecasted to be ideal, drawing many residents to local lakes. With an increase in boating activities, those responsible for lake safety emphasize the importance of staying cautious.

Local authorities stress the importance of returning safely from boating trips. As Decatur prepares for a large influx of visitors over the holiday weekend, Robert Weil, the city’s Water Production Manager, highlights several boating safety rules that should be followed.

These rules include requiring all children under 13 to wear life jackets and encouraging boaters to protect the environment by avoiding oil spills and being mindful of wildlife. Additionally, Weil advises against operating boats under the influence of alcohol.

“Water is different. Water has its own risks. And if you’re new, take time to take a boating safety course so that you know how to work your watercraft,” Weil said.

He said boat safety courses will be online through the Illinois Department of Natural Resources.

He also said if an emergency does happen, reach out to lake patrol. The patrol unit focuses on finding people who are being unsafe — if they see unsafe activity, they will issue tickets.
