Is Orlando Planning to Build an Underground Transit System? Here's the Latest Information

ORLANDO, Fla. – Speculation is swirling about a new “Loop” coming to the International Drive Resort Area, as stated by Maria Triscari, the Chamber of Commerce President for the resort area.

The topic emerged on Thursday following an article in the Orlando Business Journal that addressed the speculation of a potential collaboration between Universal and Elon Musk’s The Boring Company.

According to these rumors, the businesses are allegedly negotiating to introduce an underground transport system in the International Drive area, similar to the Vegas Loop created by The Boring Company for reducing traffic in Las Vegas.

The company’s website describes that system as follows:

“Loop is an express public transportation system that resembles an underground highway more than a subway system.

If a subway line had 100 stops, a train would typically stop at each station, so the trip between Stop 1 and Stop 100 would be long. In contrast, Loop passengers travel directly to their destination, anywhere between Stop 1 to Stop 100, without stopping at the intermediate stations. Also, the express system allows Loop vehicles to travel faster than conventional subway cars (up to 150 mph vs. up to 65 mph).”

The Boring Company, “Loop”

News 6 reached out to Triscari for more information about the rumored project, and she said she’s heard the “early conversations,” though “nothing is confirmed.”

“I-Drive is known for being a forward-thinking, tech-savvy district that embraces innovation, which is one of our biggest assets, so it’s no surprise that ideas like this surface,” she said. “At this point, nothing has been confirmed, but it’s exciting to see concepts emerging that reflect a broader vision for advanced and sustainable transportation.”

According to the Boring Company’s website, a “Loop” has essentially no limit to the number of stations that can be added along these underground routes, as any individual station can be as small as two parking spaces.

As such, this sort of system — if implemented in Orlando — could help passengers hit up many of the area’s tourist hotspots without having to struggle with road traffic.

“The fact that it’s being discussed speaks volumes about the community’s commitment to continuous improvement and bold possibilities,” Triscari added.
