Today Show anchor Craig Melvin got called out on his own show when he accidentally yawned on the air.
During an interview with Rick Springfield, known for his hit “Jessie’s Girl,” on the 3rd Hour of Today Wednesday, the musician playfully called out Today Show anchor Craig Melvin for what appeared to be a yawn during the interview, albeit off-camera.
Springfield was discussing the legacy of his hit single “Jessie’s Girl” when Melvin’s yawn distracted him from what he was saying.
Sprinfield remarked, “You can’t plan for moments like that; they just unfold,” before unexpectedly asking Melvin, “Am I putting you to sleep?”
Springfield’s bold question sent Melvin, as well as Today Show anchors Al Roker, and Jill Martin, into a fit of laughter.
“Not at all, Rick,” Melvin replied quickly. “I apologize.” As he appeared to be coughing, he clarified it wasn’t a yawn but a cough, explaining this to Springfield.
The singer continued teasing Melvin. “It’s early, don’t worry about it, I’ll yawn too,” Springfield joked.
The moment left Martin and Roker covering their faces as Melvin tried to defend himself.
But Springfield remained in good spirits for the remainder of the interview as he discussed his upcoming tour, the “I Want My ’80s Tour,” as well as his time starring in Ryan Murphy‘s new legal drama All’s Fair alongside Kim Kardashian, Glenn Close, Niecy Nash-Betts, and more.
“It’s a lot of estrogen,” he joked.
He also revealed that he had to remain professional while working with Naomi Watts, who he described to be one of his favorite actors. He compared the experience to meeting Meryl Streep.
“I was very professional with her,” he said on Today. “Like with Meryl Streep, you’ve got to get over that thing: ‘Oh my God, it’s you!’”
