CHAMPAIGN-URBANA, Ill. (WCIA) — Improper cleaning and handling in washing and packing areas are major contributors to foodborne illnesses in fresh produce, as highlighted by the University of Illinois Extension. However, there are effective methods to minimize this contamination risk, safeguarding both yourself and others from illness.

The University of Illinois Extension notes that if crops are not thoroughly sanitized or properly managed, they can pose a significant health threat. To address this concern, the U of I Extension is organizing a webinar designed to educate community members on practical approaches to reducing the risks of contamination.

Lillian Nabwiire, a food safety educator, emphasized, “The growing season is a hectic period for fruit and vegetable farmers. As the season concludes, it’s important to pause and consider one of our core motivations for cultivating fruits and vegetables, which is to deliver nutritious and safe food to our communities.”

Organizers said whether you’re managing a small farm, a large operation, or even just a backyard garden, they’ll offer important guidance that everyone can learn from.

“In this webinar, we will focus on protecting fresh fruits and vegetables from contamination after harvest,” Nabwiire said.

The webinar will take place Sept. 10 from 4-5 p.m. It’s free to attend, but attendees must register by Sept. 3.
