Dentist, health insurance, end of year claims

New data has shown that there is a massive underuse of a dental scheme that gives free dental care to Australians from newborn to 17 years old.

Research by the Australian Dental Association reveals that merely one in three eligible families utilize the free dental care offered through the government’s Child Dental Benefits Schedule.

The ADA’s study highlights a significant amount of misinformation and misunderstanding about the scheme, causing many parents to either be unaware of its availability or uncertain about their eligibility.

Of those who believed they’re eligible for the scheme, only 56 per cent have used it for their children.

This uncertainty can leave many young Australians at risk of poor dental health.

Dr. Chris Sanzaro, President of the ADA, is urging the government to improve the promotion of the scheme so that more Australian families can benefit from it.

“As a result, millions of eligible families in Australia are missing out on dental care or spending more than necessary, although the scheme could completely cover a child’s initial dental visit,” he explained.

“It’s a scheme that’s shrouded in mystery and confusion,” he continued.

Eligible families can receive up to $1132 over a two-year period for various dental services, including exams, x-rays, cleanings, fissure sealants, fillings, root canals, and extractions for children up to 17 years old.

“We are eager to collaborate with the government to simplify the core details of the scheme and raise awareness among patients and parents, ensuring that millions of children receive essential dental care to lay the foundation for lifelong oral health,” stated Sanzaro.
