A federal judge has authorized Luigi Mangione, charged with the deliberate murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson last year, to utilize a laptop in jail. This decision was made following a request from Mangione’s defense attorneys to help him prepare for his upcoming trial.

On Monday, U.S. District Judge Margaret M. Garnett issued an order directed to the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn, New York, where Mangione is detained. The order mandates that the facility provide Mangione access to “the laptop prepared by the government.”

The court document said Mangione would have access to the laptop seven days a week from 8:00 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Legal representatives for Mangione, namely Karen Friedman Agnifilo, Marc Agnifilo, and Jacob Kaplan, submitted a petition on Friday requesting a personal computing device to ensure Mangione can effectively prepare for his trial and contribute to his defense.

Mangione is accused of attacking Thompson outside a Manhattan hotel on December 4, 2024, during UnitedHealthcare’s yearly shareholder meeting.

Prosecutors contend that the fatal shooting was intended as a statement to the healthcare industry, following the discovery of a manifesto on Mangione at the time of his capture in Altoona, Pennsylvania, shortly after Thompson’s death.

He would face the death penalty if convicted.
