Senator Marsha Blackburn from Tennessee has declared her candidacy for the gubernatorial position in Tennessee, aiming to succeed the current Republican Governor Bill Lee, who faces term limits. Blackburn’s campaign for governor is strongly aligned with President Trump’s agenda.

Current Gov. Bill Lee, a Republican who has held the post since early 2019, is prevented from running for re-election in 2026 due to term limits.

Blackburn isn’t the only federal lawmaker eyeing the job — U.S. Rep. John Rose, R-Tenn., launched a gubernatorial bid earlier this year.

“In his initial six months, President Trump has achieved significant progress in Making America Great Again. As he returns power to the states, strong conservative governors will be pivotal in carrying that change forward. I am running to be Tennessee’s governor to ensure it remains the nation’s conservative leader,” Blackburn said in her statement.

Senator Blackburn has already garnered some key endorsements.

Tennessee State Representative Lee Reeves, a fellow Republican, offered enthusiastic support for Blackburn’s gubernatorial run, stating on X that she “has consistently been Tennessee’s conservative champion” and is “a leader in the battle against the Left in our state, fighting alongside President @realDonaldTrump.”

Earlier this year, Blackburn indicated her intention to run. According to the Tennessee Journal via The Tennessean, she mentioned, “I am seriously considering it. I plan to run, win, and ensure Tennessee is the most conservative state in the nation.”

Tennessee is predominantly a Republican-leaning state, suggesting that the GOP nominee has a strong chance in the general election. However, exceptions can occur, as seen in neighboring Kentucky. Nonetheless, President Trump secured Tennessee in the 2024 election with 64.2% of the vote against Kamala Harris’s 34.5%. In the same election cycle, Blackburn was re-elected to the Senate with 63.8% of the vote, outperforming Democrat Gloria Johnson who garnered 34.2%.

Senator Blackburn’s current Senate term concludes in 2030. If she wins the gubernatorial nomination and election, her Senate seat would become vacant. This situation, however, is unlikely to threaten the GOP’s hold in the Senate, as either Governor Lee or potentially Governor Blackburn, would appoint a temporary successor.
