In Masury, Ohio, a grieving mother has found solace knowing that her daughter’s last act — donating her heart — saved another person’s life.

A year ago, 22-year-old Kaitlan Adams experienced an unexpected cardiac arrest caused by internal bleeding from an undetected ectopic pregnancy. Although she passed away shortly after, her legacy continued.

“It felt surreal, like a bad dream,” recalled Sandra Hutchinson, Adams’ mother, about the moment she learned the news.

Kaitlan’s organs have since given others a chance at life. Her kidney and liver went to two different recipients, while her heart is now giving life to Nasasha Parker.

“I feel like her living on gives me comfort in my heart that she’s helping someone else,” Hutchinson said.

Parker had been enduring a lengthy struggle with AL amyloidosis and multiple melanomas, frequenting hospitals as she awaited a heart transplant.

“I was in the hospital 94, 95 days before I actually received the good news,” Parker said.

With a stethoscope in hand, Parker let Hutchinson and Kaitlan’s husband, Cade Adams, hear the heartbeat they thought they’d never hear again.

“I feel completely renewed and immensely thankful,” Parker expressed, mentioning that she initially felt “a sense of guilt” for receiving the gift of life while another person’s life ended.

“Now that I’ve met Miss Sandy, I don’t feel guilty anymore,” she said.

For Hutchinson and Cade Adams, Kaitlan lives on not just in memory, but in motion.

“I loved hearing that. I wish I could record it,” Hutchinson said.

It’s a bond born from the unthinkable that now brings healing to both sides and serves as a reminder that love never stops beating, but rather finds a new rhythm.

“It still doesn’t seem real, almost. It’s her heart that’s in there, and I got to hear it,” Cade Adams said. “It’s a lot, but it’s a lot in a good way.”
