A man has been charged with recklessly wounding a security officer inside a Sydney Detention Centre.
The 29-year-old man from Tonga, who was awaiting deportation for visa breaches, allegedly used a makeshift weapon to “wound” a security officer working at the Villawood facility yesterday, the Australian Federal Police said.
The man was arrested by NSW Police officers before being transported to Bansktown Police Station, where the matter was handed to the AFP.
He has been charged with reckless wounding. The charge carries a maximum sentence of seven years.
The man was refused bail and will appear in Bankstown Local Court today.
The detention officer received medical care at the facility before he was taken to Auburn Hospital.
He was discharged after receiving treatment for minor injuries.
