ANACONDA, Mont. – An Army veteran implicated in a deadly shooting spree at a local bar, which took the lives of four individuals in a small western town of 9,000, triggered an extensive week-long manhunt.
Michael Paul Brown, 45, from Anaconda, Montana, held the title of the state’s most wanted until he was caught near a barn, less than six miles from where the tragic event took place. Now he faces life incarcerated.
Below is a timeline of the shooting, and events that followed.
Friday, Aug. 1
Around 10:30 a.m. local time, Brown entered The Owl Bar in Anaconda—a frequent spot for him—and started shooting. His residence was next to the bar, and as per Montana Attorney General Austin Knudsen, he “probably knew the patrons there.”
The Owl Bar, a local establishment often visited by Brown, became a crime scene, with authorities taping off the area shortly after the gruesome incident. Its frequenters and staff recall the day’s tragic events with lingering shock and grief.
Brown’s residence on E. 3rd St. was boarded up, following a SWAT team operation on Friday, August 1, 2025, and was documented a week later, reflecting the extremity and intensity of the situation that unfolded in this usually peaceful neighborhood.
