CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WCIA) — An unprecedented event featured more than 1,000 flamingos in the water to support a local non-profit this past weekend in Champaign.
The Champaign-Urbana Special Recreation (CUSR) group wanted a novel approach for their fundraiser, opting for something beyond the standard duck race. Hence, they introduced the Flamazing Race. Donors contributed by purchasing a flamingo, with the proceeds going toward scholarships.
The scholarships help people with disabilities afford park district programs.
“The community truly rallied for us, which is heartening to see because it helps us spread awareness about the importance of recreational access, regardless of whether someone has a disability,” Christina Mott, CUSR Program Manager, stated.
Mott said that they raised more than $5,000. CUSR’s next fundraising event is the Cupcake 5K in November.
