WASHINGTON COUNTY, Tenn. (WJHL) — The Washington County, Tennessee Sheriff’s Office (WCSO) reported on Tuesday about the outcomes of increased patrols in downtown Johnson City over the weekend.

“We patrolled on foot, on bikes and in patrol vehicles between 10 p.m. and 4 a.m.,” Sheriff Keith Sexton stated in a news release. “Our deputies were present in parking lots and alleys, as well as the streets and businesses. We had numerous positive engagements with patrons and business owners, who appreciated our presence in helping to ensure downtown remains safe for everyone to enjoy.”

As noted in a news release from the WCSO, deputies conducted 102 additional patrols along with checks on bars and businesses in downtown Johnson City, resulting in several arrests and citations:

  • Seven public intoxication arrests
  • Three open container citations
  • Three underage consumption citations
  • Two arrested for outstanding warrants
  • One arrested for disorderly conduct and resisting arrest

The Johnson City Police Department (JCPD) indicated that their own patrols and actions over the weekend led to one DUI arrest, two citations for underage consumption, four citations for drinking in public areas, one citation for driving on a suspended license, and one trespassing warning.

Deputies involved in downtown patrols were in addition to the usual county-wide patrol efforts, the WCSO said.

Washington County 911 reportedly logged 992 calls for service involving the sheriff’s office over the weekend, including:

  • 532 extra patrols of residences and businesses
  • 177 traffic stops
  • 44 warrants served
  • Eight calls involving thefts
  • Five calls for crashes with no injuries

In total, 162 reports were filed and 43 arrests were made county-wide, including 13 from downtown Johnson City, according to the WCSO.

Sexton said the extra patrols and zero-tolerance policy will continue in downtown Johnson City “as long as necessary.”

“This enforcement effort has nothing to do with bar closure times and is solely in the interest of public safety,” Sexton said in the release.
