TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — The community is thanking Tampa Police Officers who ran into a burning home and rescued people inside.

The fire happened on Aug. 9 along the 8400 block of North Highlands Avenue.

The home still has a lot of damage and is currently unlivable.

In the body camera video from TPD, you can see the thick, black smoke pouring from the home.

Dark clouds surround it, while a man is still trapped inside.

A TPD officer asked a woman who made it out if there was anyone inside, and she said her brother was in the living room.

The officers burst through the gate and ran towards the burning home.

They ended up crawling their way to the trapped man and pulling him out by his legs.

Elieser Vega lives next door and was driving home with his wife when he saw the home on fire.

With police starting to pour into his neighborhood, he jumped in to help.

“I felt genuinely happy that I was able to assist,” Vega mentioned. “Inside the house were three elderly individuals. The police arrived, attempting to perform their duties and evacuate people. I successfully assisted an elderly woman in getting out, albeit with some challenges.”

Vega said before he left for work, all of the neighbors across the street also helped.

“Honestly, it felt very rewarding. That day turned out to be a fantastic workday because I felt I had accomplished something meaningful for the community and my neighbors,” he expressed.

Through teamwork, everyone made it out of the house alive.

Everyone was treated for smoke inhalation, and TPD said the accidental fire was put out by Tampa Fire Rescue.
