NEW YORK – Mira Sorvino is about to cross off something else on her bucket list.
The Oscar-winning actress is set to grace Broadway this autumn, making her first appearance in the musical “Chicago.” She will portray the role of the fame-craving Roxie Hart at the Ambassador Theatre from September 15 to November 2.
“Performing in a Broadway musical has been a lifelong aspiration since my childhood. Being part of ‘Chicago,’ such an iconic production with an outstanding cast throughout its history, is truly my dream realized,” Sorvino expressed in a statement released on Wednesday.
Set against the backdrop of the 1920s, “Chicago” critically examines how the entertainment industry and media create fame out of criminals. The show is renowned for its Bob Fosse-esque dance moves, provocative costumes, and iconic numbers like “All That Jazz” and “Cell Block Tango.”
Sorvino’s career highlights include winning an Oscar, a Golden Globe, and a Critics’ Choice Award for “Mighty Aphrodite.” She has appeared in notable films such as Spike Lee’s “Summer of Sam,” Antoine Fuqua’s “Replacement Killers,” Robert Redford’s “Quiz Show,” and the popular comedy “Romy and Michelle’s High School Reunion.”
The plot of “Chicago” centers around Roxie, a housewife and dancer who kills her lover when he plans to end things. To escape a conviction, Roxie enlists the most cunning attorney in Chicago to manipulate public opinion, the press, and outwit her adversary cellmate, Velma Kelly, by producing sensational headlines.
Since its 1996 debut, the character of Roxie has been portrayed by numerous actresses, including Pamela Anderson, Melanie Griffith, Ashley Graham, Christie Brinkley, Marilu Henner, Brooke Shields, Lisa Rinna, Gretchen Mol, Ashlee Simpson, Brandy Norwood, Jennifer Nettles, and Robin Givens.
