Reed was fatally shot in March 2024 during a confrontation with Chicago police in East Garfield Park after being pulled over for a reported seatbelt violation.

The medical examiner said Reed was shot 13 times. Reed died at Mt. Sinai Hospital.

Reed was stopped for a seatbelt violation, COPA said. The traffic stop ended with Reed’s SUV filled with at least a dozen bullet holes.

Five Chicago police officers were involved in the deadly West Side shootout, the Civilian Office of Police Accountability said.

According to COPA, video evidence shows that Reed appeared to fire first at an officer on the passenger side. In response, four officers from a CPD tactical unit returned 96 gunshots in 41 seconds, COPA reported.

Despite COPA’s report stating Reed initiated the gunfire, protests erupted following the release of the body camera footage, demanding the revocation of the involved officers’ police powers as the investigation proceeds.
