Second inmate in three months escapes Seattle airport custody, caught on video without restraints

For the second time in just over three months, an inmate has escaped custody at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport.

Video surveillance captured 20-year-old John Nino seemingly removing his wrist restraints before sprinting toward Highway 99, as reported in a Facebook update from the Washington Department of Corrections (DOC) on Wednesday morning.

The breakout happened shortly before 8 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 12, while Nino was being transported through Sea-Tac.

According to the DOC, Nino was last observed wearing a red coat and dark gray or black sweatpants. He escaped by crossing the light rail tracks on the airport’s east side, moving in the direction of International Boulevard and Highway 99.

Back in May, inmate Sedrick T. Stevenson made a getaway from Sea-Tac while being transferred to Kentucky, a case the DOC clarified in an email to Fox News Digital was not under their jurisdiction.

Stevenson fled through the terminal, took the light rail, and managed to evade capture for over a month until he was caught in June. FOX 13 Seattle, closely monitoring both events, highlighted this as the second escape from Sea-Tac in less than 100 days.

The DOC has not said whether any changes have yet been made to transport protocols.

In communication with Fox News Digital via email, DOC officials emphasized that they are “concentrated on locating [Nino]” and will carry out a “critical incident review” to understand how the escape occurred.
