The livestream has concluded. The hearing will be available for viewing shortly.

LETCHER COUNTY, Ky. (WJHL) — The former Letcher County sheriff accused of murdering a judge in his chambers is appearing for a status hearing Friday.

Shawn “Mickey” Stines faces charges of first-degree murder for the fatal shooting of District Judge Kevin Mullins on September 19, 2024. He also received an additional charge related to the murder of a public official.

Stines has pleaded not guilty to all charges against him.

Friday’s hearing is set to begin at 1 p.m. News Channel 11 will stream the hearing live on WJHL.com.

Following his arrest, Stines stepped down from his role as sheriff on September 30, 2024. In a retirement announcement issued by a law firm representing Stines, it was stated that his decision to retire was neither due to any ultimatum nor an admission to any allegations.

Video played in the courtroom in October 2024 depicts Stines firing a gun at Mullins, who fell from his chair afterward.

In March, Stines’s attorney notified the court that they would be preparing an insanity defense.
