Tesla has announced a recall affecting 173 units of its Cybertruck model due to a potential safety hazard involving the vehicle’s rotor. The issue, which could lead to the wheel stud detaching from the wheel hub, poses an increased risk of crashes and injuries.
The recall specifically targets Cybertrucks produced for model years 2024 to 2026 that come equipped with 18-inch steel wheels. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the problem arises when rough road conditions and aggressive cornering exert undue stress on the rotor’s stud hole. This can lead to the formation of cracks, and prolonged use under such conditions may eventually cause the wheel stud to separate from the hub.
Such separation could severely impact the vehicle’s controllability, heightening the possibility of a collision. In response, Tesla has committed to replacing the affected components—specifically, the front and rear brake rotors, hubs, and lug nuts—with sturdier alternatives at no cost to the vehicle owners.
Concerned owners can reference the manufacturer’s recall number, SB-26-33-003, and are encouraged to reach out to Tesla’s customer service at 1-877-798-3752 for assistance.
In a related development, Tesla is also recalling over 200,000 units of its Model Y, Model S, Model X, and Model 3 electric vehicles. This separate recall addresses a software glitch that temporarily disables the rearview camera, which could potentially compromise vehicle safety.
Tesla is also recalling more than 200,000 Model Y, Model S Model X and Model 3 electric vehicles because of a software issue that renders the rearview camera inoperable for a short period of time.
Loss of the rearview camera image may affect the driver’s view, increasing the risk of a crash.
Tesla’s number for this recall is SB-26-00-016.
Tesla is not aware of any accidents, fatalities or injuries related to either of the problems in the above recalls.
