Interior decorator reveals five 'ugly' things you should never put in your home

Get rid of that.

While personal style plays a big role in how someone chooses to decorate and furnish their home, one interior stylist has pointed out some “unsightly” elements he believes should be excluded from any home environment.

On TikTok, YouTube personality and style influencer Nicolas Fairford controversially highlighted five common household items that, in his opinion, detract from a room’s atmosphere and style. He advised getting rid of these items immediately.

First on his list? A TV.

Fairford shared that since moving out of his parents’ home at 18, he has never owned a television, now at 35. He feels that TVs tend to overpower a room, as furniture is typically arranged to face this “ugly black box,” disrupting the room’s flow and aesthetic. He prefers not to have one invade his space.

Another item Fairford deems a vibe-destroyer is the microwave. He describes it as just a large metal box taking up unnecessary space. As someone who cooks daily, he finds no need for a microwave cluttering his kitchen.

Though perhaps more apparent, it’s worth reconsidering if you dry your clothes by hanging them throughout your home, as it can be quite an eyesore.

“This truly diminishes the ambience of any residence. I use a spare room for drying clothes, keeping them out of sight by closing the door,” the stylist recommended.

Something else that Fairford thinks ruins a home’s vibe is overhead lighting.

“You could have a beautiful interior but if you have the overhead lighting…it makes everybody look a lot less attractive.”

Because a home’s decor is meant to make the people living in it look pretty, right?

Fairford suggested having lamps all around your home — which creates “little pulls of light to cast a nice glow.”

The fifth thing this interior decorator would never dare put into his home is unused candles.

Those sorts of “tapered, pillar candles in glass vases or globes and they’re unlit, gathering dust” look terrible to Fairford.

Expectedly, the people in the comment section of the video had a lot to say about Fairford’s opinions —some agreed, while others chimed in with additional vibe-killer decor.

“I can’t imagine living about stuff that would kill the ‘vibes.’”

“I agree with four of those… But a TV?… absolutely needed.”

“Visible cords of any kind, even outdoors.”

“Live, Laugh, love pictures.”

Now that you’re contemplating redecorating your entire home, there are other “cheap and tacky” things rich people supposedly never have in their homes.

Low-quality hardware, sloppy wiring, generic-looking curtains, ultra-trendy details, clutter, and artifical plants are all items that interior designer and content creator Bri MacDonald thinks “cheapen your space,” as explained in a Business Insider article.
