Neymar was left in tears on the pitch as Santos endured a crushing 6-0 loss at home to Vasco da Gama – the heaviest defeat of his career.

The loss marked the first occasion Santos conceded six goals on home turf in a Brazilian Serie A match, leaving the eight-time champions teetering just two points away from the relegation zone. This outcome also spelled the end of coach Cleber Xavier’s tenure, as the club announced his dismissal only hours after the game.

Vasco’s victory, their first in six league encounters and their largest triumph in 17 years, was distinguished by Philippe Coutinho, the former Liverpool and Aston Villa forward, scoring twice.

Speaking after the game, Neymar did not hold back his frustration.

“I’m ashamed,” he stated. “I’m utterly let down by our performance. The fans are completely justified in protesting, as long as it’s non-violent. If they choose to hurl insults, that’s their prerogative.”

Upon his emotional departure from the field, Neymar remarked: “I’ve never gone through something like this. The tears were out of frustration, from everything. Regrettably, I can’t assist in every way possible.”

Santos faced relegation for the first time in their history in 2023, eventually clawing their way back to the top division last season. Neymar, who rose through the club’s youth system before moving to Barcelona in 2013, returned on a brief contract in January and has since contributed six goals and three assists across 21 appearances in all contests.

Reflecting on the humbling defeat, Neymar commented: “It’s disgraceful to perform like this in the Santos jersey. Everyone should rest their head on their pillow and ponder about their intentions.”
