Husband Charged With Wife’s Murder 15 Months After Her Disappearance

Authorities in California have filed a murder charge against the husband of a 39-year-old Redding woman who disappeared more than 15 months ago.

The District Attorney’s Office in Shasta County has leveled a murder charge against Tyler McCain, alleging a special circumstance of thwarting testimony, alongside reinstating previous domestic violence charges from 2023, reported by KRCR.

Those domestic violence charges were dropped after Nikki Cheng Saelee-McCain’s disappearance.

Redding Police relayed that Saelee-McCain last communicated with family on May 17, 2024, according to an earlier report by CrimeOnline. Her vehicle was declared missing but subsequently found a week later in the western region of Tehama County, as per the Shasta County Sheriff’s Office.

Evidence of decomposition and blood was found in the vehicle, and it was determined the material belonged to the missing woman, KRCR said.

Authorities said in April they had reclassified the missing persons case as a homicide.

The district attorney’s office stated that Tyler McCain confessed to a confidential informant about killing his wife following a domestic violence confrontation on May 18, 2024. Investigations revealed an ongoing pattern of domestic violence incidents dating back to 2020.

Shasta County District Attorney Stephanie A. Bridgett expressed acknowledgment of public frustrations concerning the protracted investigation process and the earlier dismissal of domestic violence charges. She explained that without Saelee-McCain’s testimony, proving those charges was challenging, but new revelations transformed the situation.

“I extend my gratitude to the Shasta County Sheriff’s Office for their diligence, commitment, and collective efforts to conclude this investigation with adequate evidence to press charges, including murder,” Bridgett remarked. “I trust that these charges offer some level of closure to Nikki’s family and our community, who have relentlessly sought answers.”

Bridgett also disclosed that McCain faces additional charges, including those related to weapons, ammunition, forgery, and an earlier incident this year where he was observed discarding items from his car and was found with Nikki McCain’s charred driving license in his possession.

Selee-McCain’s family made a brief statement thanking law enforcement and the community at the news conference.

McCain is being held without bond and is due in court for arraignment on Friday. A reward of up to $30,000 remains for information leading to Saelee-McCain’s location. Anyone with information is urged to contact the Major Crimes Unit at MCU@shastacounty.gov or 530-245-6135.
