COLUMBIA, S.C. (WCBD) – Authorities are responding Sunday to an active incident on the University of South Carolina’s campus in Columbia.

A post from ‘Carolina Alert,’ the college’s emergency notification system, reported an active shooter at the Thomas Cooper Library. The message was also displayed on the college’s website, but it did not specify whether a shooting occurred.

“Subject is reported as a white male with black pants, approximately 6 feet tall and still in the area,” the alert indicated. “Avoid the area. Evacuate the area or seek safe shelter and barricade yourself in a safe area as necessary until further notice. Defend yourself if you encounter the suspect. Follow the commands of public safety officials.”

People are asked to avoid the area and to seek shelter until further notice.

Law enforcement officials are on the scene.
