It’s a significant day for one of Savannah’s most notable cases. Today, five individuals implicated in the fatal Oglethorpe Mall shooting are scheduled to appear in court, where a crucial hearing will determine if their cases progress toward trial.

These five suspects, which include two teenagers being prosecuted as adults, are facing serious charges such as felony murder and aggravated assault. During today’s preliminary hearing, the prosecution has the task of demonstrating sufficient evidence to uphold these charges.

The events trace back to the shooting on July 2nd inside Oglethorpe Mall, which injured three individuals with gunshot wounds and resulted in the death of Olislene “Tina” Smith, whose passing was attributed to heart complications worsened by the disorder.

Authorities apprehended six suspects, and five of them are set to appear in court at 2 p.m. today. There are suspicions that several of these individuals are linked to gang activities, which led the district attorney to seek assistance from the state attorney general. In previous hearings, bond was denied for some, including Aujauwan Hymon and 16-year-old Dahmil Johnson, who was reportedly recorded on video wielding a firearm.

This hearing is pivotal as it marks the first occasion the prosecution must present their evidence publicly in court to validate the charges. If the judge discerns probable cause, the case will proceed toward a potential indictment.

will be inside the courtroom this afternoon and bring you updates as the hearing unfolds.
