A man from Chicago, aged 32, is facing charges of attempted first-degree murder in connection to a burglary and a police shooting that took place earlier this week in Englewood, according to a Friday statement from the Chicago Police Department.

Barry Hayes has been charged with several offenses, including attempted first-degree murder, causing damage to government property valued between $500 and $10,000, aggravated battery against a peace officer, aggravated assault on a peace officer, and leaving the scene of an accident that resulted in injury, law enforcement officials confirmed.

Authorities reported that Hayes was taken into custody at around 5:07 a.m. on Wednesday in the 5800 block of South Princeton Avenue. He allegedly struck a CPD officer with a vehicle after driving toward them.

Hayes continued driving toward other officers, hitting a marked squad car, police said.

The incident unfolded around 5 a.m. on Wednesday when Chicago police received reports of individuals stealing boxes from railcars located in the area of the 5800 block of South Princeton Avenue.

When police approached, Hayes drove the car at them, CPD said.

Officers fired their weapons at him, but no one was hit.

Police previously said two guns were recovered from his vehicle. Hayes was hospitalized with minor injuries after the crash, police said.

The officer struck by the vehicle was taken to a hospital in good condition and two additional officers were taken to a hospital for observation.

A second van was seen driving away and later found in the 7100-block of South Yale Avenue, police said.

Officers attempted a traffic stop, and the van hit two squad cars, police said.

A 30-year-old suspect got out of the van, and was hit by the van, police said.

The van was later recovered unoccupied a short time later in the 7500-block of South State Street, police said.

The suspect in the van was taken to the hospital in critical condition, police said.

No additional charges have been announced.

Two officers were taken to an area hospital with non-life threatening injuries in good condition, police said.

Additionally, video footage captured by a door camera near 70th Street and Yale shows a white van seemingly speeding away from the area just as Chicago police were arriving on the scene.

Hayes is due in court Friday.

The Civilian Office of Police Accountability is investigating the shots fired.
