Cheerleader in court in full-glam after 'hiding dead baby in closet'

A cheerleader from a Kentucky college, appearing in a bright pink dress and with noticeable makeup, pleaded not guilty to charges of concealing her deceased newborn in a closet trash bag.

Twenty-one-year-old Laken Snelling was taken into custody in Lexington on Saturday. She faces charges related to corpse abuse, evidence tampering, and concealing the birth of a child.

The senior at the University of Kentucky was released with a $100,000 bail on the condition of home confinement at her parents’ residence in Jefferson City, Tennessee, according to NBC News.

During her court appearance on Tuesday, Snelling, flanked by her family, mostly kept her gaze lowered and acknowledged the judge’s terms for her release.

Her father was seen holding her hand as she walked out of the courtroom.

Authorities were called to Snelling’s residence on Wednesday morning following a report of a deceased infant in a closet, leading to the grim find, officials revealed.

The baby was pronounced dead at the scene.

It’s not clear who called police to report the alleged crime.

An arrest citation said the ‘infant was located wrapped in a towel inside of a black trash bag.’

‘By wrapping the infant in towels and placing it inside of a black trash bag, the listed suspect treated the corpse in a way that would outrage ordinary family sensibilities,’ the police report said.’

Snelling admitted to concealing the birth by cleaning any evidence before hiding the supplies and the infant, who was wrapped in a towel, in a trash bag, according to the citation.

She is next scheduled in court on September 26.

The student, who allegedly admitted to giving birth to the baby before her arrest, posted images in June where her boyfriend held her stomach, which appeared to have a visible bump.

Other images posted on social media in recent months also showed Snelling with what appeared to be a stomach bump.

However it’s not clear if Snelling had announced a pregnancy to anyone.

As previously reported, Snelling is a member of the University of Kentucky ‘stunt team,’ a competitive cheer program, according to the school’s athletics website.

‘We can confirm that she has been a member of the STUNT team for the last three seasons,’ the university said in a statement to LEX 18. ‘All other questions should be directed to the Lexington Police.’

Snelling is from White Pine, Tennessee, and was studying Interdisciplinary Disability Studies at the University of Kentucky.

A near-total abortion ban has been in effect in Kentucky since 2022, with no exceptions for rape or incest.

The ban only permits abortion to prevent the ‘substantial risk of death’ or to prevent the ‘serious, permanent impairment of a life-sustaining organ’ of the pregnant person.
