(NewsNation) — The Coast Guard is mandating a fitness test for all members, and there have been a few changes.

By year’s end, every Coast Guard member needs to complete a physical fitness evaluation. The results of this assessment will shape upcoming policies regarding the fitness test.

The mandated fitness test involves push-ups, a plank hold, a 1.5-mile run, a 12-minute swim and a 2000-meter row.

Standards vary across genders and age groups. The highest benchmark across each category is as follows:

  • Push-Ups: 29
  • Planks: 1 min 18 seconds
  • 1.5-mile run: 12 minutes 29 seconds
  • 12-minute swim: 500 meters
  • 2000-meter row: 9 minutes, 20 seconds

Planks have replaced sit-ups, and either the row, swim or run can be selected as the cardio element.

“Being prepared begins with the physical and mental readiness of each Coast Guard member,” stated Adm. Kevin Lunday, acting commandant, and Master Chief Phil Waldron in an email to the personnel.

“On that cornerstone we build the readiness of the crew, the unit, and the force.”
