A Kentucky woman is facing charges after she allegedly left her children, ages 2 and 4, alone so she could “go smoke” marijuana.

Morgan Chapman, 23, faces charges for two counts of endangering the welfare of a child. As per a complaint obtained by Law&Crime, Pikeville police responded to a domestic dispute call around 9 p.m. at an apartment on Northgate Drive. When officers arrived, two “very young children” answered the door, the complaint states.

In conducting a protective sweep, officers found the children were home alone, according to the complaint. Neighbors informed the police they were unaware of the mother’s whereabouts. A woman living across the hall reported that Chapman had asked her to watch the children at approximately 5 p.m.—about four hours prior—stating she wanted to “go smoke” and preferred not to have the kids nearby, the affidavit mentioned.

“Go smoke is a common street term for smoking marijuana,” cops wrote.

During the investigation, Chapman returned to the apartment. The officer noted the smell of alcohol on her breath and observed her bloodshot eyes and slurred speech. Chapman allegedly claimed she had only been at a neighbor’s house “for a couple minutes.”

Chapman was arrested and taken to the Pike County Detention Center, from where she has since posted bond. She appeared smiling in her mugshot. The children were taken to the police station. The Kentucky Division of Protection and Permanency was alerted to the incident.

Pikeville is located in far eastern Kentucky, some 150 miles southeast of Lexington.
