A Colorado woman is going to prison after driving her Subaru into a 79-year-old grandfather as he mowed his front yard, killing him in front of his wife after she had used marijuana and other drugs.

Amy Dalton, 38, was sentenced last week to four years in prison after being convicted of vehicular homicide while under the influence of a substance. Before she was taken into custody, Dalton told her 7-year-old son, “I love you. I promise that I will be back, OK?” according to The Gazette.

At her sentencing hearing, Dalton told the court, “I will carry the weight of this tragedy with me for the rest of my life. I accept full responsibility … I do not expect forgiveness, but I can ask.”

The El Paso County mother acknowledged smoking marijuana and taking other drugs before striking Robert “Bob” Selle, 79, and sending him “flying” from his riding mower as his wife, Donna, watched.

Donna Selle had gone outside and was “talking with” her husband shortly before he died on their front lawn, police said.

She had been watching him through the front window when she saw a silver car traveling at what appeared to be a high speed become airborne and hit him, according to police. The impact threw Selle from the mower, authorities said in the arrest affidavit obtained by Law&Crime.

Dalton killed Selle on Aug. 24, 2025, outside his home in Calhan, a small town roughly 80 miles southeast of Denver. A neighbor’s security camera recorded the crash, showing Dalton’s 2016 Subaru Outback leave the roadway and slam into Selle.

“Dalton’s Subaru became airborne over the driveway,” the affidavit stated. “As the Subaru landed, it collided with a barbed wire fence and then traveled into the yard/field … where it (Subaru) collided with Robert Selle, who was operating a riding lawn mower.”

According to police, the footage showed Dalton’s vehicle overturning before striking Selle. “The Subaru continued overturning in the field, coming to rest on its roof,” the affidavit said. “Selle was knocked from the lawn mower and came to rest on the ground near the Subaru.”

Selle was initially conscious and “talking with his wife, who witnessed the crash,” but he later lost consciousness and died at the scene.

“For no obvious reason at the time, Dalton failed to maintain control of the Subaru and the vehicle drifted off the right/west side of the roadway,” the affidavit said. Data recovered from the vehicle’s airbag control module indicated that Dalton neither braked nor made an evasive steering maneuver during the seconds before the collision.

After the crash, officers reported detecting “a strong odor of marijuana coming from her,” according to the affidavit. Dalton told investigators that she used marijuana daily and took “multiple medications.” She also admitted that she had “recently tried methamphetamine for the first time.”

Troopers who interviewed Dalton described her as “mellow” and said she was “not very responsive” to questions or treatment from emergency medical personnel. One trooper later noted that her eyelids “seemed very heavy,” according to the affidavit.

Dalton attributed the crash to “two bad tires,” saying they caused her to drive erratically. She also said she believed she had “overcorrected but could not expand on that.” Police said Dalton described the steering as feeling “weird” and “funny.”

Dalton consented to a voluntary drug test. The results detected at least two substances that investigators said contributed to the crash.

Selle’s obituary remembered him as a “pillar” in the communities where he had lived and as a devoted husband and grandfather of five.

“As condolences continue to pour in, Bob Selle is being remembered as a legacy, an inspiration, a hero, a great human being, a role model, kind, caring, generous, an amazing person, a class act, a loving husband, a teacher, a leader, a great man, one of the best, and as respect personified,” the obituary said. “And yet, of all these descriptors, his favorite one was ‘Grandpa Bob.'”

After Dalton’s sentencing, Selle’s son told The Gazette, “There’s no positive outcome for any of this for anybody. I’m just glad it’s over.”
