Exciting news surfaced a couple of years back about the continuation of the iconic “Terminator” series. James Cameron, the mind behind the original movie and its highly acclaimed sequel, announced in 2023 that he began working on a new “Terminator” movie script. However, it’s still in progress since Cameron hasn’t completed the screenplay yet, attributing the delay to the challenges posed by real-world events.

“I’m at a point right now where I have a hard time writing science fiction,” Cameron shared in a conversation with CNN (reported via Collider). The director finds it difficult to craft a story that won’t quickly become obsolete due to rapid advancements in real life. “We are living in a science fiction age right now, and the only way out is through — by using our intelligence, by using our curiosity, by using our command of technology — but also by really understanding the stark probabilities that we face.” Crafting a new movie that matches the excellence of the top “Terminator” films is a tough task, especially considering the influence of AI, which complicates finding a plot that resonates today.

Admittedly, writer’s block is not the sole reason for the delay on the new “Terminator” script. Cameron is busy with numerous other projects, most notably his other grand sci-fi series, “Avatar.” Though fans can anticipate new additions to Cameron’s cinematic repertoire soon, the wait for the next “Terminator” installment might be longer than expected.

James Cameron has plenty on his plate

As Cameron works on the upcoming “Terminator” script, he stays busy with other projects. “Avatar: Fire and Ash,” the third film in the acclaimed sci-fi series, is scheduled for release in December 2025, and Cameron has plans to direct the fourth installment too. His vision aims for a total of at least six or seven movies, though he won’t direct them all.

In a departure from science fiction, Cameron is also tackling a very different kind of project. Announced in 2024, he will direct an adaptation of Charles Pellegrino’s novel “Ghosts of Hiroshima,” providing an intimate look at the destruction caused by the atomic bomb. The 71-year-old director reportedly vowed to one of the last bombing survivors that he would create the film.

Some fans suspect that Hollywood might not produce another “Terminator” film, but hope remains. Despite his obstacles, Cameron isn’t ready to abandon his script, and the franchise retains a devoted fan base eager for its continuation. If all else fails, perhaps our own real-world Skynet will finish the script for him.
