19 people injured after field rush, altercation following Virginia's win over Florida State

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WRIC) — A spokesperson for the university confirmed that nineteen people were injured following a Friday night football game at Scott Stadium in Charlottesville, where Virginia achieved a remarkable victory over Florida State.

In the evening, a “large number” of fans stormed the field at Scott Stadium, leading law enforcement officers to “[immediately take] action to maintain public safety,” according to a spokesperson from the University of Virginia who spoke to Nexstar’s WRIC.

UVA Health confirmed 19 people were treated after the game, though the nature of their injuries wasn’t disclosed due to health system policies.

Additionally, there was a clash between fans outside the stadium after the game on Friday night, which required a response from law enforcement. The university spokesperson characterized it as an “isolated incident” that was “promptly addressed to ensure the safety of all attendees.”

It hasn’t been confirmed whether those treated were injured following the field rush, the altercation outside the stadium or both incidents.

“The University of Virginia Police Division, alongside local and state law enforcement partners, responded swiftly to these occurrences,” a UVA spokesperson stated. “Together, our agencies are dedicated to ensuring a safe environment for the university community and its visitors.”

Virginia triumphed over No. 8 Florida State 46-38 on Friday night, marking its first home win against a top-10 team, which led fans to charge the field in celebration.
