Anti-Defamation League retires glossary of extremist groups after backlash for including Charlie Kirk's TPUSA

The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) recently decided to pull its entire “Glossary of Extremism and Hate” from its website following criticism, notably from Elon Musk and Republican lawmakers, due to the inclusion of Turning Point USA (TPUSA) as an extremist organization.

The decision comes in the wake of the backlash sparked after the tragic event involving TPUSA co-founder Charlie Kirk, who was killed at Utah Valley University during a campus event.

On the ADL site, TPUSA’s profile under the “Center of Extremism” category detailed the group’s connections to “various right-wing extremists and its backing from anti-Muslim bigots, alt-lite figures, and segments of the white supremacist alt-right.”

The ADL expressed that, by withdrawing the glossary immediately, they intend to continuously look for better approaches to their work, refining their processes and effectiveness.

This glossary, which contained over 1,000 terms accumulated over years, was removed because certain entries were described as “outdated,” though specifics on these entries were not disclosed.

“This move will enable the ADL to pursue new methods and creative solutions for sharing our data and presenting our research more effectively. It will help us maintain our focus on our core mission: effectively combating antisemitism and hate,” the ADL commented in part on X.

The glossary included groups like the Nation of Islam, the Proud Boys, the Oath Keepers, and others. It also included TPUSA and the “America First” movement, while leaving out controversial groups like Antifa and Black Lives Matter.

“Being included in this database does not mean that individuals or groups are engaging in illegal or violent conduct, but rather that in ADL’s judgment the views as exemplified by the statements made in support of those views can be considered extreme,” the glossary’s homepage states.

Fox News Digital reached out to the ADL for comment, but did not hear back by time of publication.
