State-of-the-art technology restores classic film 'The Sound of Music' to its clear, bright, colorful glory 60 years after release

BURBANK, Calif — To celebrate “The Sound of Music” on its 60th anniversary, the classic film has been newly restored using state-of-the-art technology. For the first time, it’s now available for home viewing in 4K Ultra HD digital and in Blu-Ray.

Besides bonus content, including a sing-along version, there is remastered sound and restored visuals fixed frame by frame. That’s 24 frames per second made sharper and clearer and brighter.

We caught up with three of the actresses who famously played some of the von Trapp children.

“It’s not boring, not any part of it anywhere. I mean, it keeps your attention going the whole time. There’s emotion, there’s singing, there’s happiness, there’s scary. You know, I think it just has the whole gamut,” said Debbie Turner.

“It’s an iconic movie!” Angela Cartwright added. “And we didn’t know when we were filming the movie that it would be so evergreen and span so many generations. But it has. And we’re very grateful for that, that it still has this magic that it had before.”

The young performers who played the von Trapp children shared a fondness for their leading lady, Julie Andrews.

“She was wonderful on set — warm, loving, comforting, entertaining. And you can see in the ‘My Favorite Things’ scene how much Debbie and I are gazing at her adoringly,” said Kym Karath.

In a Hollywood ripe with re-makes and re-imaginings, the ladies don’t recommend anyone tackle what Oscar-winning director Robert Wise did 60 years ago.

“He had a vision. He knew exactly how he wanted every scene to look, sound and be put together,” said Turner.

“And who can replace Julie and that voice and Chris Plummer with all his nuances?” Cartwright said. “I mean, good luck with that production!”
