URBANA, Ill. (WCIA) — The Illinois African Descent-Citizens Reparations Commission held a public hearing at the University of Illinois on Saturday.

Academics, scholars, and officials from local government gathered at the Krannert Performing Arts Center to discuss both the legacy of slavery and its ongoing impacts on the descendants of enslaved individuals today.

“We need to seize this moment not only for our own benefit but for future generations,” stated Urbana Mayor DeShawn Williams. “Illinois is one of just three states that have established a dedicated reparations commission.”

The Urbana hearing is part of a series taking place across the state, which will contribute to a report on the effects of slavery in Illinois, to be presented with recommendations to state legislators next year.

“This will illustrate a clear path to understanding the problem that needs addressing,” explained commission chair Marvin Slaughter Jr. “It’s crucial we connect with citizens throughout Illinois, including downstate, Central Illinois, and the Chicagoland region.”
