A woman who was shot by federal immigration agents on Saturday morning in Chicago has been discharged from the hospital and is now in FBI custody, according to a statement from the Department of Homeland Security.

DHS reported that the incident took place on the Southwest Side of the city when agents from U.S. Customs and Border Protection were attacked by individuals described as “domestic terrorists” who rammed their vehicles into federal law enforcement officers.

The woman, injured by “defensive fire” from CBP agents, was driving one of the vehicles and had a semiautomatic weapon, a DHS news release said.

Officials stated that the situation escalated as more individuals labeled as domestic terrorists arrived and began hurling smoke, gas, rocks, and bottles at law enforcement officers from DHS. At least three additional individuals were apprehended related to the scene.

The woman, who was transferred to FBI custody post-hospital release, has a history of exposing the identities of federal agents, according to the DHS. Her name is being withheld as she has not been formally charged, as noted by Homeland Security.

Several officers from CBP required medical attention at the hospital due to injuries, and an Immigration and Customs Enforcement vehicle had to be left behind after it was overrun by the assailants, officials noted.

This incident comes as the Trump administration increases federal enforcement in Chicago under the campaign called “Operation Midway Blitz,” which is part of a broader effort to combat illegal immigration and has faced opposition locally.
