The long-awaited follow-up to 2010’s “Tron: Legacy” and the third installment in the “Tron” series, “Tron: Ares,” is the latest spectacle set in a somewhat dystopian, highly futuristic, and predominantly electronic world. While Jeff Bridges is set to reprise his role as Kevin Flynn, the former head of the fictional tech company ENCOM who ventures into the “Grid,” the film also welcomes a slew of new actors to the “Tron” universe. Among these are Jared Leto, Gillian Anderson, Jodie Turner-Smith, “The Daily Show” alum Hasan Minhaj, “American Horror Story” regular Evan Peters, and Academy Award nominee Greta Lee.
So who does Lee portray? As the new CEO of ENCOM, she’s on a mission to locate Kevin Flynn and discover his “permanent source code,” which enables tracking individuals in this realm. For those who are familiar with her, the Korean-American actress has showcased her versatility across both film and television. From comedic sketches to prestigious dramas to acclaimed Oscar films, here’s where you’ve seen Greta Lee before.
You’ve definitely seen Greta Lee in a whole bunch of TV shows before
In terms of her television work, Greta Lee has practically been in everything. Her first credited appearance was in 2006 with a brief part in an episode of “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit.” Following that, Lee appeared in shows like “Nurse Jackie,” “High Maintenance,” and “Girls”—and notably, as a recurring sketch performer on the hit Comedy Central series “Inside Amy Schumer.” After a turn as Jake Johnson’s love interest Nick Miller in “New Girl” and recurring roles on “Wayward Pines,” “Chance,” and “The Good Fight,” Lee secured her most significant role so far on the Netflix comedy “Russian Doll” with Natasha Lyonne, who created the show with Amy Poehler and Leslye Headland. As Nadia Vulvokov (Lyonne) repeatedly dies and relives her birthday, Lee’s Maxine repeatedly greets her with the phrase “sweet birthday baby,” in a hilariously amusing manner.
Post “Russian Doll,” Lee landed a role on the Apple TV+ flagship series “The Morning Show” as Stella Bak, the president of the fictional network UBA’s news division, earning her an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series in 2024. Additionally, Lee found time to make appearances in Jordan Peele’s iteration of “The Twilight Zone,” the vampire comedy “What We Do in the Shadows,” and even the Apple TV+ Hollywood spoof “The Studio,” where she plays herself.
On the big screen, Greta Lee has made a name for herself as a seriously acclaimed actress
While Greta Lee’s body of work is more extensive in television than film, her notable big screen roles garnered attention, including an Oscar nomination for one of her starring roles. After supporting roles in films like “Sisters,” “Money Monster,” and “Gemini,” Lee lent her voice to the animated “Spider-Verse” films as the character Lyla, though this focuses on where you might have seen her rather than heard her.
Many likely recognize Lee from “Past Lives,” Celine Song’s stunning and deeply moving 2023 feature debut that casts Lee as Nora Moon, a young woman confronting her past, present, and future in surprising ways. After cultivating a long friendship and simmering attraction with her childhood friend Hae Sung (Teo Yoo) in South Korea, Lee’s Na Young relocates to America with her family, renames herself Nora Moon, meets, and marries fellow writer Arthur Zaturansky (John Magaro), and settles in New York City. When Hae Sung visits New York to see Nora, she must navigate feelings of what could have been, despite her love for her life with Arthur. While we won’t reveal the film’s conclusion, suffice it to say the final shots are both breathtaking and heartbreaking.
Besides “Past Lives,” Lee has also appeared in films like “Problemista,” “The Tiger’s Apprentice,” and “House of Dynamite.” You can catch her as Eve Kim in “Tron: Ares” when it hits theaters on October 10.
