The last fugitive of a group of New Orleans jail escapees was involved in a standoff with law enforcement in Atlanta, according to officials.
Derrick Groves was taken into custody following the incident, the Louisiana State Police (LSP) said.
Through the cooperative efforts of Crimestoppers Greater New Orleans, U.S. Marshals, the FBI, Homeland Security, Louisiana State Police, Orleans Parish Sheriff’s Office, New Orleans Police, Atlanta Police, and numerous other federal, state, and local agencies, 28-year-old Derrick Groves was captured on October 8, 2025, in Atlanta, Georgia, after a brief standoff, as reported by LSP to Fox News.
One of the ten inmates who broke out of Orleans Parish Jail, Derrick Groves, was apprehended in Atlanta after a police standoff. Groves was the last escapee still at large since the May jailbreak.
The Orleans Justice Center was operating at just 60% staffing capacity, with four supervisors and 36 staff responsible for overseeing 1,400 inmates at the time of the breakout.
Many of the fugitive inmates were captured within weeks of their escape.
Darriana Burton, a 28-year-old believed to be the girlfriend of Derrick Groves, was taken into custody on Monday.
