Pritzker: ICE Agents Should Be Charged for Breaking Local, State Laws

In an appearance on MSNBC’s “The Briefing” this Thursday, Illinois Governor JB Pritzker expressed his stance that Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents should face charges if they breach local or state laws.

During the discussion, host Jen Psaki inquired, “You mentioned on Sunday your interest in prosecuting ICE agents who violate the law. Can you elaborate on that? What form might this take?”

Governor Pritzker responded by emphasizing the uncertainty of federal accountability, thereby prompting state-level considerations. He stated, “We’re exploring all possible actions at the local level, collaborating with county state’s attorneys and attorneys general, to pursue legal action against individuals violating Illinois laws and local ordinances. For instance, if an agent, while driving through a community, hurls a tear gas canister from their vehicle at a bystander, that constitutes a clear violation of Illinois law. The question remains whether we can hold such agents accountable. If a police officer or any civilian committed such an act, they would face charges. Thus, it stands to reason that agents should also be subject to legal accountability for breaking local and state laws.”
