In a troubling case emerging from Georgia, authorities have charged a couple with child cruelty after they reportedly left their three young children, all under five years old, unattended and hungry at a campsite. The children were allegedly without food for several days.

Jason Askea, 46, and Kira Askea, 41, face charges of inflicting excessive physical or mental pain on their children. According to arrest documents reviewed by Law&Crime, the couple is accused of depriving their 2-year-old son, who has Down syndrome, of necessary medical support. This includes cutting off his prescribed oxygen, crucial for his brain development, and removing his feeding tube, vital for his nutritional needs.

The documents further reveal that the young boy suffers from a chronic infectious dental condition.

Reports from Fox 5 Atlanta indicate that deputies from the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office were called to Little Tallapoosa Park in Carrollton on September 16. This location is approximately 45 miles west of Atlanta. A concerned camper alerted the authorities after discovering the children, aged 2, 4, and 5, alone in a tent. The children reportedly informed the camper they hadn’t eaten in two days.

Officers found the children in unsanitary conditions, reportedly covered in feces. Like their youngest sibling, the two older children also exhibited poor dental hygiene, officials noted.

The kids also appeared to be covered in feces. Like the boy with Down syndrome, the other two kids also had bad dental hygiene, cops concluded.

Eventually, the parents returned to the campsite and cops took them to jail where they remain without bond. They reportedly told cops they had recently lost their home and had been living with the kids in a tent in the 330-acre park.

The children are now in the custody of the Department of Family and Children Services.
