Democratic Congressman Robert Garcia has branded Donald Trump’s family “corrupt” and promised an aggressive investigation into Stephen Miller, the president’s newly appointed chief of staff.
Garcia, a California representative who won a third term during last week’s midterm blue wave, delivered the sharp criticism of the Trump administration during an appearance on CNN on Sunday morning.
He is expected to become chairman of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform. On election night, Garcia made clear that investigating Trump would be a priority, posting the words “LAWYER UP” in capital letters on X.
Speaking on CNN, Garcia described Trump and his sons as “the most corrupt family to ever be in the Oval Office and the White House.” He added: “Donald Trump is the most corrupt person to ever be president of the United States.”
Garcia cited what he characterized as examples of financial misconduct, saying: “You have Don Jr getting hundreds of thousands of dollars from a Russian oligarch for his wedding. Sitting on boards that are getting contracts from the Pentagon.
“You have Jared Kushner getting $2 billion from the Saudis after leaving the White House.”
Garcia confirmed that he intends to investigate the Trump family, arguing that “the grift” was leaving the Trumps billions of dollars richer while ordinary Americans struggled to afford gas and groceries.
The congressman also directed his criticism at Stephen Miller, whom Trump recently announced would replace Susie Wiles as chief of staff.

Garcia signaled his intention to investigate the Trump administration on midterm election night with this post
“Stephen Miller is the architect of this horrific, unjust policy happening across the country,” Garcia said. “Stephen Miller called Alex Pretti, as we know, an assassin.”
Pretti was an American citizen who was shot 10 times in the back by immigration agents while being pinned to the ground during ICE protests in Minneapolis.
Miller described Pretti as a “would-be assassin” and “domestic terrorist” who had “tried to murder federal law enforcement.” After facing intense backlash and the emergence of video evidence contradicting those claims, Miller withdrew the comments but did not apologize.
Garcia accused Miller of “creating immigration policy that separates families. That is causing people harm. That is creating a detention process where a few large companies are profiting [from] the unconstitutional detention of people.”

“That has to be investigated,” Garcia said. “And we know that Stephen Miller has been an architect of that.”
“What’s happening there, what’s happening in Iran. Stephen Miller is at the center of the major policy decisions that are happening in the administration, and so it does deserve oversight and investigation,” Garcia added.
Since election night, Garcia has remained highly active on social media, reiterating that a Democratic-led Oversight Committee under his chairmanship would examine the Trump administration, the president’s family and their allies.
He has repeatedly vowed to “take on” the Trump family, major corporations and aggressive immigration enforcement. Garcia has also backed an investigation into what he calls a “White House coverup” of the Epstein files.

Garcia explained this post by saying: “When Republicans go low, what we’re not gonna do anymore is just take the high road and turn the other cheek”
Garcia’s forceful statements since the election have prompted responses from prominent conservatives and Trump administration officials, including former White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt and Attorney General Todd Blanche.
After Garcia issued a statement through the Oversight Committee saying “Stephen Miller should lawyer up,” Blanche responded on X: “The Chief of Staff already has a lawyer. The Attorney General of the United States and the Department of Justice.”
Garcia shot back: “While we have your attention, when are you coming in to testify under oath about covering up the Epstein files? Or are you too scared to come in?”
In an interview with Lara Trump on Fox News on Saturday night, Leavitt said: “You had Rep Garcia’s first statement after election night was ‘Lawyer up.’
“This is a party whose base is hellbent on political retribution, obstructionism, impeachment – they don’t want to do what’s best for the voters who elected them.”
Garcia has occasionally taken a more humorous approach. On his personal X account, he posted an image of the clown from the horror film “It” peering from a sewer, accompanied by the caption: “When they go low this is me.”
Explaining the post on CNN, Garcia said: “This is a joke. I mean, basically what I’m saying is when Republicans go low, what we’re not gonna do anymore is just take the high road and turn the other cheek. We’re gonna get down and be in that fight.”
