US President Donald Trump said late on Thursday that he was ending “all trade negotiations” with Canada because of a television ad opposing US tariffs that he said misstated the facts and called “egregious behaviour” aimed at influencing US court decisions.

In a recent post on his social media platform, former U.S. President Donald Trump addressed comments made by Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, who expressed intentions to amplify Canada’s exports to countries beyond the U.S. This move is seen as a response to the economic risks posed by Trump’s tariffs.

Trump’s suggestion to abruptly terminate ongoing negotiations could potentially escalate the trade tensions that have been simmering between the two neighboring nations for several months.

The former president has reacted by intensifying tariffs on steel and aluminum, doubling the previously set rates.

The U.S. has been implementing significant tariffs on a variety of Canadian goods, which has strained trade relations between the two countries.

In retaliation, Canada introduced its own tariffs on selected American products in April, though it allowed certain exemptions for automakers to import a limited number of vehicles without facing these levies, a measure known as remission quotas.

The imposition of tariffs by Trump has severely impacted Canada’s automotive industry, particularly in Ontario. This month, automaker Stellantis announced plans to relocate a production line from Ontario to Illinois, highlighting the sector’s struggles.
