Amidst applause and heartfelt cheers, Sophia Forchas made her triumphant exit from the hospital, symbolizing an extraordinary recovery after the tragic shooting at Annunciation Catholic Church.
In Minneapolis, a large gathering of supporters came together on Thursday to celebrate the 12-year-old’s remarkable journey to recovery. Doctors had initially been uncertain about her chances of survival, making this moment all the more poignant.
Sophia was among the students attending a back-to-school Mass at the Annunciation Catholic Church, which is adjacent to her school, when tragedy struck on August 27. A 23-year-old gunman opened fire, injuring more than 20 individuals. Tragically, two children, Harper Moyski and Fletcher Merkel, lost their lives in the attack.
Merely nine days following the incident, Sophia’s medical team informed the media that she had sustained a gunshot wound to the head, with the bullet still embedded in her brain. To manage the swelling, surgeons had to remove the left portion of her skull.
On September 22, her family released a statement expressing their awe at her recovery, describing it as “nothing short of miraculous.”
“Sophia is strong, brave, and unwavering in her fight toward healing. We ask that you continue to pray for her as she walks this road to recovery,” the family shared, reflecting their immense hope and determination.
Forchas was recovering at Gillette Children’s Hospital in St. Paul, but on Thursday, she visited HCMC to thank the staff for the critical care she received in the aftermath of the shooting. She was immediately embraced by the doctors and nurses who cared for her as people held a banner that read “Sophia Strong” and another that said “Happy Birthday.”
Annunciation Catholic School has welcomed back students, and Bows of Love is working to collect ribbons that were hung around town to be used in a future memorial.
The 12-year-old is now heading home.
