Ian Watkins, the former lead singer of the British rock band Lostprophets, tragically lost his life after being stabbed in the neck. This incident occurred while he was serving a 29-year sentence for numerous child sex offenses.

The attack took place on October 11 at HMP Wakefield, a prison in West Yorkshire, England. Watkins had been incarcerated there following his 2013 guilty plea to 13 charges, including creating and possessing child pornography, sexually assaulting a child under 13, and attempting to rape an infant.

The cause of Watkins’ death was officially confirmed on Friday during an inquest at Wakefield Coroner’s Court, which has now concluded, as reported by BBC News.

Coroner Oliver Longstaff explained that paramedics were dispatched to the prison after receiving a report of Watkins being stabbed in the neck. Despite their efforts, he was declared dead at the scene by a doctor and was formally identified by a prison officer.

Longstaff mentioned that although the coroner’s inquiry would be paused pending the criminal justice proceedings, it might resume if deemed necessary.

Following Watkins’ death, authorities arrested two individuals, Rashid Gedel, 25, and Samuel Dodsworth, 43, charging them with murder. Recently, West Yorkshire police also apprehended two more suspects on suspicion of conspiracy to murder, though their identities remain undisclosed.

“Extensive enquiries remain ongoing in relation to the murder of Ian Watkins and these arrests form part of that,” Longstaff said. “Ian Watkins’ family are being updated as the investigation progresses. However, we do not anticipate any immediate developments at this stage.”
