JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Tragedy struck on Wednesday night as a fatal collision claimed the life of a man and left a woman injured on Monument Road, the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office reported.
The accident unfolded around 5:50 p.m., a time when many are navigating the evening commute. The crash site, near the intersection with Lee Road, was marked by a dramatic scene: a Jeep, severely damaged and overturned, lay upended on the roadside.
According to the sheriff’s office, the incident occurred when a woman in her 30s was driving her Jeep eastbound on Monument Road, while a man in his late 50s was traveling westbound in a Kia. The collision took place as the man attempted a left turn onto Lee Road, leading to the Jeep rolling over into a nearby empty retention pond.
Emergency services rushed both drivers to a hospital, but tragically, the man succumbed to his injuries shortly after arriving. Authorities confirmed that the woman is currently in a stable condition.
A woman in her 30s was driving the Jeep eastbound on Monument Rd., JSO said, while a man in his late 50s was driving westbound in a Kia. When the man attempted to make a left turn onto Lee Road, the two cars collided, causing the Jeep to rollover into a nearby empty retention pond.
Although both drivers were taken to a hospital, the man was pronounced dead shortly after arrival. JSO said the woman is in “stable condition.”
Lee Road remained closed into the late evening hours.
This is the 141st traffic death in Duval County this year, according to JSO reporting.
