Addison shooting: 1 in custody after shots fired at police, standoff on East La Porte Drive cause shelter-in-place, officials say

In a tense situation that unfolded Thursday in Addison, Illinois, law enforcement successfully apprehended a male suspect after a standoff that included setting objects ablaze on a suburban street, according to local authorities.

Law enforcement received an urgent 911 call shortly before 11 a.m., alerting them to a potentially dangerous scenario. The caller, believed to be the suspect, demanded police assistance to locate his missing dogs, threatening to find others to do the job if they failed, police reported.

As officers were en route, residents in the vicinity of the 200-block of East La Porte Drive witnessed unsettling activity. A man, carrying a bag and accompanied by a white SUV, was seen obstructing the road. Witnesses reported him spraying an unidentified substance and igniting various items, adding to the alarming nature of the incident.

Upon the arrival of the police just after 11 a.m., the situation escalated. The suspect retreated into a residence, and shots were fired at the responding officers from within the house, authorities said.

He was also spraying an unknown substance around the street and lighting items on fire, police said.

Some police were taken to a local hospital with minor injuries.

No one else was injured, police said.

The suspect was eventually taken into custody.

Police asked residents nearby to stay inside during the incident.

Addison Trail High School was also in a “secure” environment as a precaution, police said. Students and staff are safe.

Also as a precaution, all nine buildings from Addison School District 4 were in a “secure” environment.

There was no direct link to the school district.
