Pilsen, Chicago homeowner's annual Dia de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, display draws visitors from across area

A Pilsen resident has transformed her home into a vibrant tribute for Día de los Muertos, an annual tradition she has maintained for the past five years.

For the past ten days, visitors have flocked to Isabel’s residence on 19th Street to view photographs and pay homage to their loved ones. This gathering has fostered a sense of community, celebrating a day that holds deep significance for many.

Isabel sought to create a space where people could come together to honor those who have passed. By collecting photographs from both social media and local neighbors, she has crafted a poignant display that invites everyone to pay their respects.

“It’s truly beautiful; a way to remember our loved ones,” expressed Maria Rosales. “We’ve lost family members in the past couple of years, and it’s comforting to take a moment to honor them.”

Visitors from across the Chicagoland area have been drawn to this heartfelt homage. On Sunday night, a mother and her son traveled from Auburn Gresham to witness the powerful display, describing it as a unifying expression of faith for Chicagoans.

“We’ve experienced the loss of about four loved ones this year,” the mother shared. “It’s been a year marked by incredible loss, yet I’m grateful for these beautiful mementos that help us cherish the memories of those who have gone before us and celebrate life.”

This display also hits close to home for one man who actually lived in this same building 25 years ago.

Ponch and Isabel were neighbors before, and on Sunday, they reunited. It was a moment that meant even more to him as the photo of his mother sat on the display.

“I look at my parents’ house, and that brings tears, because both of my parents just passed recently, and they have a picture of my mom up there,” Ponch said.

Sunday marks end of the display. Remarkably, Isabel says she does this all on her own without any help. So, if you live near Pilsen, come on by and help her take down these decorations. She says she is now going to get ready for Christmas as soon as possible.
